Shortly before, the president had announced on social media platforms Instagram, Facebook and X that he would no longer be running for a second term in the November election.
In recent weeks, the 81-year-old had come under massive pressure within his own party due to his age and mental state, with Republican rival Donald Trump's poll numbers edging up all the while.
