Officers spotted the driver in a van without headlights in Wodonga, Victoria, on June 24 at about 12.10am.
The driver of the van also ran a red light on High Street before he was intercepted.
The 21-year-old returned a positive breath test before a subsequent evidentiary breath test returned a reading of .102.
But the saga took an unexpected twist when, just hours later, another patrol unit noticed a black Holden Barina without headlights on Havelock Street at about 4.30am.
To the officers' surprise, they found the same driver behind the wheel.
