An urgent nationwide recall has been issued for four brands of poppy seeds, after a spate of poisonings from the toxic product.

These poppy seeds can cause cardiac arrest, seizures and severe muscle cramping, muscle spasms and abnormal movements. More than 20 people being sent to hospital across Australia after being poisoned.
They should not be consumed in any amount.
Brands included in the recall are: Hoyts, Gaganis premium Australian Poppy Seeds, Royal Fields Poppy Seeds, and East West Foods Wholesale poppy seeds.
These poppy seeds have unusually high levels of a naturally occurring chemical (thebaine), that is likely causing this toxicity, health authorities warn.
Recalled poppy seed brands
- 100 gram sachet packets; 240 gram PET jars
- Batch numbers are: 28622, 29322, 29822 and 29922
- 250g, 500g and 5kg packets
- Best before June 25, 2024
- Sold at Coles and independent food retailers in Victoria
- 500g and 1kg sachet packets
- Best before dates from September 1, 2023 up to and including November 8, 2023, July 2024 and October 2024
- Sold at independent food retailers, online, and direct from Gaganis in South Australia
- 1 kilogram bags
- Best before July 22, 2024
- Sold at Whole + Some Shop in Adelaide; Indian Spice Bazaar in Woodville Gardens in South Australia
NSW Poisons Information Centre medical director, Associate Professor Darren Roberts, said the poppy seed product can be dangerous.
"We are urging anyone who experiences any unusual and severe symptoms to seek immediate medical attention, by visiting their nearest emergency department. Call triple-0 for emergency assistance," he said.
A joint investigation with health and food safety authorities found the non-food grade poppy seeds had been sold as food grade products.
