And with the "significant weather event" expected to last another day at least, these refuges could well swell in number.
The NSW State Emergency Service has listed the following centres as open and available.
Right now the SES may not be able to answer your call as quickly as usual. The service asks that if you need any general updates about the current severe weather, please call 1800 227 228.
And if you need assistance in floods and storms, please call 132 500. If the situation is life-threatening please call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
