Future plans for Allansford's Tooram Memorial Park include bushwalk, gazebo and central house

With enough land to meet the community's needs for half a millennium, there have also been discussions about a possible gazebo and house at the site.

Warrnambool Cemetery Trust volunteers, together with Warrnambool Central Rotary are on a mission to plant 200 native trees at Allansford's Tooram Memorial Park.

Land for the new development was purchased after Warrnambool General Cemetery reached capacity.

Warrnambool Cemetery Trust chair Sheryl Nicolson said the trees would help form a native bushwalk.

"Some cemeteries have memorial sites that are in amongst bushland so people can meander through the bush and amongst it is a rock with a plant on it and that's where ashes are," she said.

"We're planning for that into the future so we're planting lots of trees and it's coming along slowly. It's a long process."

Trust secretary Karen Johnson said she was thankful for the extra hands and volunteers as there was "no such thing as a pop-up cemetery".

"We're managing two cemeteries and by doing that the staff aren't always able to get out and do these things, although we are having internments here now," she said.

"The 200 small trees will give the cemetery a nice aesthetic as they grow. Today's plan is to plant around the boundary and clean up the overgrowth on the sides.

"There is no such thing as a pop-up cemetery and when the opportunity was given to us, we were ever so grateful. No matter how many show up, it's an opportunity to do something and get things done."

She said there were already plans for future developments in the works, though ideas and designs may change with time.

"It's up to a stage where there are plans to build a gazebo down the bottom end - that'll be the next structural thing to happen out there," she said.

"For now we're getting planting done but we are considering what else we want to do. We're also looking at building a house with a small opening area - just things like that so there is a central point where people can come out here.

"The projection is there is enough land purchased here to see us through 500 years. So as you can imagine as that time evolves ideas will change and designs will change."
