NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard said he is waiting for test results for two more students at Regents Park Christian School in south west Sydney during a press conference on Friday.
"There are two other students that Health are currently investigating. They have had early indications of a dropout S-gene, which is an early indication of a possible Omicron. And I'm expecting that those results should be back later today," Mr Hazzard said.
"So it is a challenge, it's a particular school in the south west of Sydney and the senior students at this time of year, it's convenient, so they've gone home, it's fine. And the others, the ones we need to, are obviously being tested if they are in the cohorts with the relevant students."
Mr Hazzard said the already-confirmed case in the high school student "is of concern".
"This is the first case that we know of that appears not to have had any travel history. So it would appear to be at least until there's further investigation, it would appear that the case could well be an on-NSW-soil transmission,' the Health Minister said.
The high school student is NSW's ninth Omicron case and has been dismissed for the year from the school as contact tracers investigate how they were infected.
"NSW Health is concerned the virus may have been acquired in the community as the case has no overseas travel history or links to people with overseas travel history," NSW Health said in a statement.
NSW recorded 337 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, bringing the total number of cases in NSW since the beginning of the pandemic to 82,325.
There are currently 140 COVID-19 cases admitted to hospital, with 25 people in intensive care, 10 of whom require ventilation.
