The popularity of Warrnambool Rollers come and try event on Sunday pleasantly surprised onlookers and organisers.
More than 50 people young and old were skating around in the Warrnambool Showgrounds sheep pavilion. Participants were kitted out in knee pads and different coloured skates and helmets as they took on the limbo challenge with the iconic Limbo Rock pumping from speakers.
Warrnambool Rollers is a group keen to build its membership and hosted two events on Sunday as part of South West Games - the come and try and a social roller disco at night.
Warrnambool roller derby team head coach Rosie Ceratops and Sarah Robinson - who coaches roller derby and skate fit - ran the day session.
"It's actually overwhelming how many people decided to show up, we're glad we've got enough gear to get through them all," Ceratops said.
"That's our big worry is having enough gear to let anybody come and try at anytime."
Robinson explained that was why the club was keen to have its roller disco fundraiser so it could buy more equipment.
Ceratops said the club was working towards having a roller derby team. "We're still finding members that are actually going to be working towards being on a derby team," she said.
"Because it's a fairly intense sport. There is a lot of physical aspects to it and a lot of skills involved."
The idea is to start people in the club's skate fit program which is purely skating and then bring them to derby.
Rollery derby is a team sport which involves blocking for teammates. Points are earned by getting around the track and not getting taken out by the other team.
Ceratops said the group, which has been based at the sheep pavilion about a year, had been working to improve the venue so its ready for roller derby.
"We're eventually going to have proper flooring and a track laid out on the ground so you can actually see the parameters and where you can stay in because that makes a huge difference," she said.
For those interested Warrnambool Rollers offers sessions on Tuesday and Wednesdays at 6.30-8pm and Sundays at 12pm.
