Pfizer vaccination wait period to change to three weeks

Premier Daniel Andrews announced the change on Sunday.

"The interval changes down to three weeks," Mr Andrews said.

"That will help us in the race to get to 70 per cent double dosed."

Mr Andrews said that was hoped to be achieved on or about October 26.

Victoria has recorded 1220 new cases of COVID-19 and three deaths.

It comes after a record high number was announced on Saturday, at 1488 cases.

The new cases announced today were detected from 71,275 test results, which was a record day of testing in the state.

There are now 11,785 active cases.

Royal Melbourne Hospital nursing unit manager Michelle Spence spoke about her experience over the past few months.

She said since the end of July there had been 90 patients admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit with COVID-19.

"Not one of those 90 were fully vaccinated," she said.

Ms Spence said COVID-19 did not discriminate, with people of all ages struck down by the virus.

"One of the saddest things I've seen over the last few weeks is people wanting the vaccination just before we put them on a life support machine," she said.

"If you're waiting now to get your vaccination, this is your window to not be this person."
