Who are the Hampden league's emerging netballers?

Others got a taste of open netball.

One, Hamilton Kangaroos' Hollie Phillips, made The Standard's team of the year.

Many of her contemporaries will be vying for a spot in the years to come.

Hampden league netball co-ordinator Trish Butters believes the future is bright.

Six players in particular established themselves in the top-grade in 2021 - Warrnambool's Ava Pierce, North Warrnambool Eagles' Tahni Porter, Cobden's Lara Taylor, Koroit's Millie Jennings, South Warrnambool's Olivia Marris and Portland's Katie Zeunert.

Butters said Pierce was a midcourter who was "an in-and-under player".

"She knows where to be, she can get the ball and drives hard to the ring," she said.

Porter's quiet nature belies her on-court impact.

"Tahni is an unassuming player and is just reliable," Butters said.

"She's played on the hardest defenders all year and got the best a lot of times.

"She's a lovely shooter, very quiet and won't be talking on the court that's for sure."

Taylor was a "very fit player" who worked hard to squeeze into the undefeated Cobden team in wing defence.

"She has a really good ball sense, knows when to go for a ball and makes good space," Butters said.

"She doesn't get into other people's space and works well with others around her."

Jennings joined Koroit from Portland and looked assured at wing defence.

"She's one of those players who can play tight, get off her player and knows where to be," Butters said.

"If she is playing on you, you have to work hard to get the ball."

Butters said Marris was an accurate goalie who was also unassuming.

"She can shoot from anywhere in the ring and combines really well with Annie (Blackburn)," she said.

Zeunert can play a variety of roles.

"The day I saw Katie she played in goal defence," Butters said.

"In juniors when she came up I thought she was more of a midcourter than a defender but in that team they are a bit short on defenders.

"I thought she played a really good game the day I saw her, she played on Tahni so it was similar young players playing together.

"She is smart, very athletic. If they had more defenders and they could put her in the midcourt, that would probably be a better spot for her."

Others to impress Butters included Ally Mellblom (South Warrnambool), Matilda Fitzgerald, Mia Mills, Molly McLaren and Gretta Gleeson (Koroit) and Camperdown duo Mary Place and Ruby Conheady "who can play goal shooter and goal keeper and can be swapped from one end to the other".

Then there's Hamilton Kangaroos' Alice Sevoir, Port Fairy pair Maddie Green and Tessa Allen and Terang Mortlake's Alice Suhan, May Suhan, Grace Wareham and Alice Grundy "who are all going to be superstars".

Butters said Sevoir was waiting in the wings at Hamilton.

"She hasn't played seniors yet and is a beautiful goal shooter," she said.

"She played in our (Hampden) 17 and under rep team. She is a lovely tall goalie."

Butters said Gleeson was another awaiting an opportunity at Koroit.

"Gretta is still under 17 and has played div one all year with maybe an odd game in the seniors," she said.

"Gretta is either a goal shooter or goal keeper and they've got Nell (Mitchell) who they are not going to put out. But Gretta is a really good player and we had her in our rep team too."
