Warrnambool-raised rower Kathryn Ross does family proud at fourth Paralympic Games

The Warrnambool-raised, four-time Paralympian won the PR2 mixed double scull B-Final with Simon Albury on Sunday after the pair just missed out on a spot in the medal race.

Dad Alan Ross, who watched from south-west Victoria, said Kathryn's persistence and determination was an inspiration.

"We were really pleased they at least finished on a good note," he told The Standard.

"(The repechage result) was quite disappointing but they rode really well and it just didn't happen.

"They just faded at the wrong time. It was amazing with the way Poland cramped so bad and nearly tipped the boat over and to get back that was a great credit to them."

Alan said Kathryn and Simon, competing at the Paralympics together for the first time, combined well in their three races - a heat, repechage and B-Final - all over 2000 metres.

They finished third in their repechage with the top-two advancing the the A-Final.

"The whole family are proud of what they've achieved and achieved under pretty hard circumstances where they haven't been able to train together with (COVID-19) lockdown," he said.

"Over quite a long period of rowing Kathryn has really achieved a lot and she's done western Victoria very proud and the country as a whole."

Alan is unsure if Kathryn, an emergency department nurse based in Canberra, will vie for the Paris Paralympics

"Maybe if they bring in the single scull event in her disability area, she might have another go," he said.

In the meantime, Kathryn has a wedding to plan. She recently got engaged to long-time partner Christian.
