Victorian driver Alex Ross wins wingless sprint showcase in Darwin

The current Victorian number one finished first, second and fourth in three A-Mains to be crowned champion.

Ross, 24, said it was a significant result.

"The biggest thing about this whole weekend is consistency," he said.

"Two years ago that is the biggest thing I realised. It didn't matter if you had one good night, you had to be consistent over all three."

Ross drove for Larry Fitzpatrick Auto Sports. He said he was grateful they trusted him behind the wheel.

"It was a last-minute call up and to do as well as we did, I am really proud of the team," he said.

"It is unreal and to be as fast as we were on such short notice was really good.

"It is a big result, it's a pretty big thing to win so I am pretty proud of it."

Ross said the team had its share of obstacles and it "seemed like it was one step forward, two steps back".

"I was leading the feature race until the last lap on the first night and the runner-up car collided with me on the last corner but I still managed to finish second," he said.

"I won the second night and the last night I had to start at the rear in my both heats because my transponder wasn't working.

"I was up against it and it was going to very difficult for me to win. I qualified 11^th and finished fourth in the final and had enough points to take it out."

Ross' family and friends in Victoria couldn't attend the three-night Darwin meeting due to COVID-19 border restrictions.

He said he was grateful they could watch a live Facebook stream.

Ross said he'd enjoyed his time up north with life relatively normal bar check-in codes.

Meanwhile, Warrnambool sprintcar driver Jamie Veal won the Chariots of Thunder A-Main on the final night of the three-night showcase.

Veal also finished second on night two.

Matt Egel took out overall honours after winning two of the three finals.
