Australian Boomers to play for bronze medal at Tokyo Olympics

Team USA was too strong for the Boomers, featuring Warrnambool's Nathan Sobey, with the three-time reigning champions winning 97-78.

Sobey, running the point, played 10:58 minutes in the semi-final. The Boomers will play the winner of the France and Slovenia match in Saturday's bronze medal match.

The Brisbane Bullets star checked into the game in the second term. He had an assist and one defensive rebound in his first three minutes on the court before returning to the bench.

He returned later in the quarter and collected another rebound before missing a shot from beyond the arc.

Sobey also handed off an assist for Patty Mills to fire for three in his other minutes in the second term.

Australia started well to lead by six at the first change. A late Chris Goulding three ensured Brian Goorjian's side led 24-18 at the first break.

Just before half-time the Americans dragged the margin back thanks to a number of Boomers' turnovers.

The Australians went into the long break up 45-42 but momentum was swinging heavily towards Team USA.

After half-time the US flexed its muscles and jumped out to a 19-point buffer at the final break after recording a 32-10 quarter.

Sobey featured briefly in the third term as the Americans turned up the heat to score 55 points to 33 after the main break.

He returned in the final term and added five points to his Olympic tally. He also had an assist.

The Boomers were unable to drag the margin back in the fourth term as the US cruised to a 19-point win.

Patty Mills was the Boomers top scorer with 15 points. He also had eight assists and three steals in his 28 minutes on court.

Dante Exum was the next best with 14 points. Jock Landale also scored 11 points and had six rebounds.

The Australians defeated Argentina in their quarter-final on Tuesday night to book a date with Team USA.
