Warrnambool Seahawks commit to Big V double-header after COVID-19 accommodation concerns

The fixtures, against Keysborough on Saturday night and Camberwell on Sunday afternoon, were under a cloud due to coronavirus restrictions.

Warrnambool Seahawks and Mermaids president Jacob Sobey relayed his concerns, surrounding travel and accommodation, to the league last week.

He met with officials on Monday night. It was decided the Seahawks would play.

It comes after the Mermaids' clash against Mildura Heat was cancelled last week, given the accommodation burden which included each player having to have a separate room and the opposition's restraints with players and coaches stuck on the New South Wales' side of the Murray River.

Sobey said he was pleased the Seahawks could continue their season and build on Saturday's night confidence-boosting win against Coburg Giants at the Arc.

"They will be required to stay in separate accommodation (instead of sharing) which we're working through at the moment," he said.

"It's is going to come as a bit of an extra cost to the club, not being able to combine people in rooms but at the same time, it is what it is at the moment.

"Travelling up and back on both days wasn't an option. We'll have to wear the extra cost for the accommodation but the guys are playing so that's the main thing.

"Hopefully there will be some rebates and reimbursements from the league at the end of the year."

Sobey said it would be "a skeleton crew".

"Usually for an away double-header you'd take about 12 players, just because of injuries and stuff, as well as coaches and a team manager," he said.

The Mermaids will return after three weeks off against Pakenham at the Arc on Saturday night.
