The Bookaar trap shooter hit 72 of a possible 75 targets in the first three qualification rounds on Wednesday to be sixth out of 26 competitors.
She will complete the final two rounds (50 shots) on Thursday morning with the top-six shooters to advance to the final that afternoon.
Smith, a graduate of Warrnambool's King's College, gradually improved during her first three rounds.
She hit 23 of 25 targets in round one, 24 of 25 in round two and finished with a perfect 25/25.
Fellow Australian Laetisha Scanlan (73/75) is one shot ahead of Smith in fifth place.
Only one shooter - Slovakia's Zuzana Rehak Stefecekova - hit all 75 targets.
Day two qualification will start at 10am Thursday morning AEST with finals to be televised from 3pm.
