Warrnambool councillors to vote on $2.6m in projects for Lake Pertobe, community groups

Plans for a $1.77 million playspace and waterplay project for Lake Pertobe looks set to get the go ahead with a preferred tender going before councillors for approval on Monday night.

A $450,000 new car park at Lake Pertobe and $430,000 worth of community projects are also on the agenda for the ordinary council meeting.

The Lake Pertobe projects are part of a $2.9 million makeover that was first unveiled in December 2019.

While councillors are expected to vote through a tender for the works to start, the council agenda warns that there may be delays in getting the play equipment due to shortages created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funding for the project has come from the federal government's Building Better Regions Fund and the council.

In addition to the new playground, the revamp also includes a new toilet block at McGennan car park, all-abilities paths and a walking trail - some of which have already been installed.

A decision on the new design and a possible relocation of the McGennan car park toilets is still to be decided but a number of options are under consideration including moving the ageing facilities closer to the beach.

Councillors will also vote on awarding a tender to carry out work on a major upgrade to the main car park at Lake Pertobe on Monday night.

Under the plan, the car park opposite the carnival site would be resurfaced and made slightly wider to fit in 112 parking spaces.

Funding for the car park project comes as part of the Federal Government's pandemic stimulus spend.

About $430,000 worth of community projects have been earmarked for approval with councillors to vote on dipping into its small infrastructure fund.

The fund - which was set up by the previous council in 2014 to allow councillors to approve smaller projects that are presented to them throughout the year - has a balance of $1.2 million.
