YOUNG athletes enjoyed two days of state level competition on the weekend as Warrnambool hosted the Victorian Multi Event Championships.Three-hundred Little Athletics members competed at Brauerander Park on Saturday, followed by 200 more yesterday.Athletes contested five track-and-field events to gather points towards an overall score. The top two from each age group were granted places in the national competition to be held in Adelaide later in the year.Warrnambool Little Athletics Club president Tony Sharam said the weekend ran smoothly."Warrnambool really turned it on," he said."We had great feedback from officials who were impressed with our organisation."Sharam admitted, however, that wind caused problems during the discus event on Saturday."At one stage the discus was almost going backwards," he said.Warrnambool athletes Hein Reimert and Nathan Krepps posted the south-west's best results.Reimert won the under-13 800 metres in two minutes and 19 seconds, to finish an overall eighth. Krepps won the under-15 discus with a throw of 51.5 metres, to finish an overall 11th.Sharam said 11 athletes represented Warrnambool, while Camperdown and Hamilton entered about five each in the competition. Knox City was the best represented club in the state. After the successful weekend, Sharam said Warrnambool would be bidding to host regional relay or track-and-field competitions next season."We are leaning towards going for the track-and-field," he said.
