Camperdown, Warrnambool tie in Hampden league open netball

The Blues and Magpies played out a high-scoring 45-all draw at Leura Oval.

It was the Magpies' second tie of the Hampden netball league season, having also shared the points with South Warrnambool.

Warrnambool coach Raewyn Poumako and Camperdown counterpart Brooke Richardson said both teams had their chances. Poumako said the last quarter was a battle to the final whistle.

"It was pretty even and we were going goal for goal and we'd get a turnover and go up a couple of goals, they'd get a turnover and would be up a couple of goals," she said.

Poumako said the Blues wasted chances and would learn from the lost opportunity. "It was a pretty physical game and there were errors in it," she said.

"I felt we should have won it. We had a few unforced errors and things which made a difference.

"If we didn't have three or four of the unforced errors where we threw the ball straight into the hands of the opposition or we didn't drop the ball then it would be a different story. It was a winnable game for us."

Richardson said it was a game of ebbs and flows.

"It was back and forth all day. It was a tough game. They are a quality side with quality players," she said.

"The ultimate aim is to come away with the four points so we're slightly disappointed we didn't get the four points but I'm still really proud of the girls for their fight throughout the game, especially in that last quarter."

Poumako said Amy Wormald was best on court after a strong display at goal attack and was almost the difference between the two sides.

"She just doesn't make mistakes and her leadership on court is really strong and just her effort, both attacking and defending, is consistent the whole game," she said.

"She was a hard one for Camperdown to try and stop. She was dominant all over the court. She shot 35 goals at nearly 90 per cent."

Richardson had two players - Ruby Pekin-Schlicht and Jess Cameron - rotate on Wormald. Geelong Cougars-listed Pekin-Schlicht was restricted to two quarters due to a Victorian Netball League match being scheduled on Sunday.

She played the first and last terms. Both coaches were pleased with areas of their games.

"Even though we have a core group we've had the last couple of years we've still got a lot of new faces in our team and we've got a long way to go until we're at our full potential," Poumako said.

"However I am pleased each we we are making steps. I thought our defensive pressure all over the court was better and that's something that we have wanted to improve."

Richardson praised the Magpies' attacking end of Amanda Gilbert and Krystal Baker and midcourters Grace Lucas and Tracey Baker who shared wing defence duties.

Blue Ash Evans, who had been managing a calf injury, came off with an ankle injury.
