Portland wins second netball game of season, beating Terang Mortlake

The Tigers scored their second win of the season with a 55-47 triumph over Terang Mortlake in the Hampden league's fifth round on Saturday.

Hockley has shifted her side's attacking end in recent weeks with emerging goalies Hannah Bunney and Heidi Jones benefiting from playing alongside their mentor in attack.

"We had a bit of a change up in goals for a couple of games and that is working for us and we are getting consistency in our shooting," she said.

"We have a couple of girls that have had sinus problems like this asthma thing and haven't been able to run out that goal attack position and one is only young and straight out of the under 17s.

"It has been good to give them a bit of confidence and feel if they can't keep going, stop and come off and we can bring someone else on and it has worked.

"They have even called it themselves saying 'I can't keep up, I have got to come off'. They have shown really great maturity. "

Bunney scored 29 of the Tigers' 55 goals while Jones, who was named one of her side's best players, contributed 26 of her own in the victory.

The Tigers, who sit in ninth, now prepare to face an undefeated Cobden at Hanlon Park next Saturday.

Terang Mortlake coach Liz Fowler said her side would look to regroup after the tough loss, which included seeing their captain Rhi Davis go down in the last quarter.

"I'm really confident about our girls and I think we have got a lot of strength in our defence, in our attack, in our youth and in our passages of play," she said.

"Portland fought really hard and we had opportunities and we turned a lot of balls over but we just didn't convert them or capitalise on them while they were very good.

"If they got a turnover they would make the most of it. We will regroup, re-work and they are all really committed and they are all turning up and putting in the work.

"We will just keep doing what we are doing."

The bottom-placed Bloods, who have a 1-4 record so far this season, will travel to Warrnambool to face the Blues.
