South-west SES volunteers deployed to help clean up after Geraldton cyclone

Four volunteers from Warrnambool, Portland, Hamilton and Heywood units will be based in Geraldton and the surrounding areas, 400 kilometres north of Perth, after leaving Victoria on Sunday afternoon.

They are expected to return late on Thursday.

The SES is liaising with emergency authorities in Western Australia to see if, what and when other resources may be required.

Cyclone Seroja was classified a category three cyclone when it crossed the coast last weekend, with 170-km/h wind gusts causing the most damage in the holiday town of Kalbarri.

The damage to some properties is so severe many will need to be demolished.

Warrnambool SES unit controller Giorgio Palmeri said the members stayed in Perth overnight Sunday and were about to board a Royal Australian Air Force plane to Geraldton.

"We'll be helping as much as possible to make properties hit by the cyclone safe," he said.

"We'll also work to clear roads from fallen trees."

Mr Palmeri said the cyclone had cut communication to most of Geraldton.
