Koroit embracing underdog tag as it gets ready to battle Warrnambool Gold in decider

That's why it's embracing its status as an underdog leading into a clutch preliminary final against powerhouse Warrnambool Gold at Timboon on Saturday.

Koroit missed Western District Bowls Division's weekend pennant finals this past season after an extended period in the premiership mix.

But it sprung back to prominence almost immediately - defeating City Gold this past week - and is now eyeing a grand final berth.

It hopes a more carefree and relaxed attitude can spur it on to glory.

"It's been a while," skipper Steve Quinlan said.

"We obviously missed out last year but we've been a bit more consistent this season. We've recruited for a bit of strength with Peter Ellis coming in.

"We're sort of underdogs this season whereas in previous seasons we've finished on top. We were probably one of the favourites for a few years but didn't quite get there.

"We've got nothing to lose. We'll just go out there and enjoy each other's company and though we do take it seriously, we all have fun out here.

"That makes us a good unit. If you enjoy what you're doing, the results will come."

Wayne Cooper, another Koroit skipper, said his side had shaken its reputation as a team who faded late in games.

"We've also finished better. In the past, we've fallen away. This season we've finished games off and it's pleasing to be doing that," he said.

"We've played a tie in a grand final against the side with it going to an extra end (and lost) so you do have to be focused right until the end."

Cooper said it was crucial for his club to keep its focus on the match.

"I think we need to focus on the process," he said.

"Hit our lines, and enjoy what we do. It's pretty simple."

The winner of the match will advance to meet City Memorial Red in the decider next Saturday. In other grades, Lawn Tennis Red will play Dunkeld Blue at City Memorial in the division two preliminary final.

Terang Gold will play City Green in the division three preliminary final, Mortlake Gold will play City Yellow in the division four grand final while City Orange and Koroit Red will play off in the division five preliminary final.

Cooper said it was pleasing to see a Koroit side also enjoy success in division five.

"They've had a few forfeits because they didn't have the numbers but since then, they've won every game they've played," he said.

"We'll call into Dennington on Saturday morning and see how they're going."
