Each week a group of green thumbs meet and get to work in the Fletcher Jones garden.
Volunteer, Dulcie Askew, said more helpers were needed to help maintain the special place.
"There is about six or seven of us who meet once a week," she said.
"If we concentrate on one garden nothing else gets done."
Mrs Askew said some gardening knowledge was helpful for volunteers but anyone willing to help was welcome.
"Anyone can pick up a wheelbarrow and pull weeds," she said.

She said people often commented how good the gardens looked but there was a lot of work needed to maintain them.
"If you look up close it's quite messy," she said.

Mrs Askew, a keen and passionate gardener, began helping at Fletcher Jones garden about seven years ago.
"I helped the former gardener and when he retired I kept asking different friends to come and help," she said.

The gardens date back to 1948. They surround the former factory, which closed in 2005. The site was heritage listed in 2006.
The gardeners meet every Tuesday at 9.30am. Anyone wanting to help should come to the front gate.
