But it's proving a difficult task.
Garry Gavin is in Udon Thani in Thailand, which is where his nine-year-old son Ryan lives.
Ryan was born in Thailand and Mr Gavin has visited him several times a year since he was born.
He travelled there in December last year to spend time with his son.
Now he wants to return home and bring his son.
The 43-year-old has contacted the Australian Embassy and Member for Wannon Dan Tehan to raise awareness about his plight.
"I'm a single father wanting to return home from Bangkok," Mr Gavin said.
"My issue is there is only one repat flight from Bangkok to Australia and they are capped at 35 people a week."
"All I want to do is return to Warrnambool and work and take care of my son.
"I miss home and my family and friends and I want to give my son the best opportunities in life."
Mr Gavin's latest attempt was to secure seats on a flight on December 13.
He does not yet know whether he is successful, but did receive an email saying there was substantial interest in the flights being offered for Australians.
"If you do not receive an email unfortunately you have not been allocated a seat for the flight," the email states.
"With over 250 people expressing interest in the flight and only 30 seats many people are disappointed.
"I strongly recommend you continue to check commercial options as well as registering your interest in the repatriation flights."
Federal opposition leader Anthony Albanese's office replied to Mr Gavin's email asking for assistance.
"Labor has been calling for the Morrison government to pick up its act on this issue," the email states.
"The Morrison government must do more to get stranded Australians home - including scheduling more repatriation flights and providing more quarantine spots."
Member for Wannon Dan Tehan was contacted by The Standard about the issue.
