Camperdown Mitre 10 chief executive officer Kevin Ford said the store would now review its security arrangements.
He said a stocktake was in the process of being conducted to determine exactly what was stolen.
"We are working out what was stolen," he said.
"We are still going through a stocktake, but they appear to have gone straight for the power tools.
"CCTV footage is in the process of being provided to police."
Mr Ford said he had been the store CEO for about three-and-a-half years and in that time the Mitre 10 outlet had not been the target of similar offending.
"No we haven't had anything like this in my time, but I have been informed today there has been in the past," he said.
"We'll certainly now look at added security in our review.
"We are fortunate that our building is up off the ground, there are steps leading in our entry, which is a bonus and helps prevent ram raids.

"We'll look at more preventive measures to make the process of breaking in a hell of a lot more difficult in future."
Mr Ford said that may involve a roller door or similar barrier, but the aim would be to slow down any attempt to enter the store.
Earlier: Power tools have been stolen during a smash-and-grab raid at the Camperdown Mitre 10 store early Wednesday morning.
Camperdown police Sergeant Cameron Ross said the alarm was triggered at 4.20am when offenders entered the Scott Street store.
"They forced entry through the front doors, have gone straight to the power tools section and removed a number of items, including a drop saw," he said.
"We are still waiting for a list of the tools that were taken and CCTV footage is yet to be downloaded.
"The offenders, we believe there was more than one, drove a vehicle onto the nature sdtrip and used it as a getaway car."
Sergeant Ross said the offenders tried to jemmy open the front door, that failed, and they just smashed the front glass doors to gain entry.
Anyone who witnessed the burglary, or who has information including dash camera footage, is requested to contact the Camperdown police station on 5593 1000 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
