Whale sightings in full swing in Portland as competition to name a sub-adult launches

Bob McPherson saw two southern right whales swimming together and was able to capture the moment one of them breached in Portland on Sunday.

Glenelg Shire, Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism and DELWP are encouraging whale watchers to log their whale sightings to go into the running to win the opportunity to name whale 190719; a sub-adult with interesting white blazes on its belly and chin.

DELWP's Natural Environment programs officer Mandy Watson is backing the competition.

"It's really helpful for our identification project if people go to the trouble of logging their sighting through the official channels," she said.

"This particular whale's (whale 190719) last confirmed sighting was at the Portland Breakwater on July 19 last year."

The winner will also receive a whale watching weekend for two including two nights' accommodation at the Cape Nelson Lighthouse cottages and a four-course degustation for two at Portland's Clock By The Bay restaurant.
