AFL Victoria is closing in on a decision on when or if football can resume

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Friday the National Cabinet was developing a guiding set of principles for all levels of sport amid the coronarvirus pandemic. It will review restrictions at a meeting on May 10, providing the curve is still flattening and testing rates increase.

Federal, state and territory governments have indicated they could ease lockdown restrictions by mid-May if the current low trend of transmission continues.

AFL Victoria head of community football Stephen O'Donohue said an update on country and suburban football's short-term future would come after an announcement on the AFL's state of play.

O'Donohue said AFL Victoria would have a clearer picture of when grassroots football could possibly resume once the country's elite competition unveiled its plans.

"Pleasingly, governments across Australia are well aware that it will be vital for local sport to resume and re-connect support networks that are currently stretched or not operating," he said in a statement.

"We continue to focus on being aligned with the advice of the government and the relevant medical authorities and are ensuring everything we do protects the health and safety of our participants and wider community."

AFL Western District's hiatus is in place until May 31.
