This trio of players who are usually named just off the starting list would still be more than capable of playing in the side but different factors keep them out.
They can be a mix of players with different experience and scenarios.
Sometimes it is made up of purely youngsters who are really pushing for an opportunity in the senior side.
It can be a player just returning from injury who might not be in the form needed of them to play at the top level which is mixed with one or two young players to fill it out.

Another scenario is a mix of a returning player, rising youngster or a player who has been at the club for sometime but has not been able to cement their spot in the side because of form.
That player is usually referred to as a "fringe player" and that phrase also relates to many different types of players. Often it could be that they are simply just squeezed out of the side.

But no matter the situation any player named as an emergency would put anything on the line to get into the side.
For this side's emergencies we have gone for two youngsters and one fringe player, who in this case is just squeezed out of the side based on its make up.
They have a combined 89 games of AFL experience, features one Rising Star winner and has accumulated eight Brownlow votes.
With more games under their belt it wouldn't be a surprise to see any of them remain an emergency if this team was re-done down the track.
Willem Drew
AFL club: Port Adelaide 2017-present
South-west connection: Koroit
Height: 188cm
Games: 10 - five wins, five losses
The Port Adelaide youngster has had a rough start to his AFL career with injuries and form, in the one season he has been fit, limiting what he has shown on this stage.
As an emerging midfielder at the Power he has shown signs of his ability to play on the inside or outside as well as pushing forward to kick goals.
He is big-bodied and is becoming renowned for his decision making under pressure.

In 2017 he averaged more than 15 touches a game for Port Adelaide's SANFL side in his second year at the club. He also kicked six goals from 20 appearances at that level.
His 2018 season was impacted by a significant foot injury. He finally got his body right in 2019 to play the first 10 games of his AFL career.
At this level he averaged 16 disposals - seven kicks, nine handballs - a game.
He also laid at least five tackles, completed two clearances and went inside 50 two or more times a match.
Sam Walsh
AFL club: Carlton 2019-present
South-west connection: Cobden
Height: 184cm
Games: 23 - seven wins, 16 losses
Achievements: Six goals, 2019 Rising Star winner, selected in 2019 22-under-22 team, six brownlow votes
Not many players have had the immediate impact in their first year in the competition as Walsh did last season.
If it was a few years down the track he would be a strong chance to make the starting 22.
The 2019 Rising Star winner burst onto the scene immediately and has shown he is more than capable of playing consistently at the highest level.
He has become a staple of Carlton's midfield brigade alongside star co-captain Patrick Cripps.
Walsh plays as a crafty inside midfielder who uses his speed, agility and slick skills to free teammates and himself for uncontested possessions.

He is also highly consistent, strongly built and possess phenomenal aerobic capacity for a second-year player.
The Blue averages 25 disposals - 13 kicks and 12 handballs - a game. His work around the contest is also high, racking up three tackles, two rebound 50s, three inside 50s and three clearances.
Outside of the coalface he is more than capable of having an impact and he is also a handy kick for goal, recording six majors in his first season.
Most of his 25 disposals a game are uncontested showing his capability to also play just as well on the outside as he does on the inside.
Jackson Merrett
AFL club: Essendon 2012-18
South-west connection: Cobden
Height: 184cm
Games: 56 - 24 wins, 32 losses
Achievements: 23 goals, two Brownlow votes
The speedy half-forward/midfielder showed glimpses of his ability at the top level in his 56 games for the Bombers and is just get squeezed out of the main side because of the interchange spots by other midfielders.

His best season came in 2015 when he played 15 games and kicked eight goals but injury and form limited his output before he was delisted at the end of 2018.
Across his career he averaged 13 disposals - most of them kicks - three marks, two tackles and two inside 50s a game.
He was also accurate around goal kicking 23 majors at 58.97 per cent accuracy.
