Western District Golf Association president Martina Whelan said all events endorsed by the body - including pennant and women's tournaments in Portland and Dartmoor - had been cancelled.
"We probably left (the decision) a few days later than we should have but we thought we'd wait for Golf Australia," she said.
"Working in the profession of infection control and getting closer to pennant I thought 'we need to call this now'.
"I think Golf Australia will follow with the same decision shortly but I felt we needed to go ahead and make a sensible decision."
Whelan said clubs had final say over their tournaments and encouraged players to consider playing regular weekly golf.
She said, however, it was vital for golfers to follow Department of Health and Human Services advice and practice "good hand hygiene, good cough and sneeze etiquette and social distancing".
She said it was unlikely pennant would return later in the year.
