Port Adelaide footballer Willem Drew's delayed start to 2020 AFL season

Drew, 21, noticed discomfort in his foot during the Power's pre-season clash against Western Bulldogs.

The three-time Koroit premiership player, who missed the entire 2018 season due to foot problems, had fractured a metatarsal bone in his left foot.

"We sought various opinions both locally and interstate on the best management for Willem's injury and ultimately we decided surgery would be the best option," Port Adelaide head of medical services Tim O'Leary told the club's website.

"It's an unfortunate injury for Willem after he put in a strong block of training in pre-season.

"He is recovering well after the operation and we'll establish a timeline for his return in the coming weeks."

Drew has endured a bumpy start to his AFL career.

He spent his first season honing his skills in the SANFL, playing in the 2017 grand final for the Port Adelaide Magpies before suffering a serious injury in his second season at the Power.

The inside midfielder, known for his quick hands and football nous, made his AFL debut in round one last season and featured in 10 matches for the Ken Hinkley-coached team.
