City Memorial secures 19th mid-week pennant in dominant fashion

City Gold now has 19 pennant victories from 28 grand finals over the past 43 seasons of the Tuesday competition, which was originally women only.

More than half of those victories have come since the turn of the millennium with this season's victory their third in succession since losing to Warrnambool Gold in 2016-17.

Skip Colleen Haberfield, who collected her 14^th pennant in the 87-63 victory over Timboon Maroon, said she would never grow tired of winning WDBD grand finals.

"It gets better everytime," she said after her side's win in front of a big crowd at Warrnambool Bowls Club.

"We came from third position this time which made it a little but harder and (we had) fight (to win it)."

Haberfield praised the efforts of all the rinks in another dominant day for City.

"Kaye (Maddern) done extra well, Pauline's (Burleigh) did very well and we struggled but we didn't do great numbers and went down by seven overall on our rink," she said.

"The whole team played well and we are very lucky to have two stronger rinks and then ourselves, we try very hard."

Maddern's rink was the key in the victory, defeating Timboon counterpart Noeline Richards 47-10. Burleigh's quartet lost 19-25 to Sandra Trigg while Haberfield's went down 21-28 against Pam Dwyer.

Haberfield, who only plays in the mid-week pennant, said there was one factor that drove City Gold in its quest to remain the number one team in the competition.

"It is something that happens over the year when you have the 14 home and away games and you play those to get to the grand final, that is the incentive," she said.

There are a number of factors that contribute to Haberfield's sustained involvement with the Warrnambool club.

"Playing for the club, the people and I enjoy my bowls very much," she said.

"It's a good club atmosphere and the friendship and comradeship is as well."

Timboon Bowls Club is still in the hunt for pennant success with its Saturday division one team - Timboon Gold - playing against Warrnambool Gold on its home deck this weekend.

In the other mid-week pennant grades, Warrnambool Gold defeated Port Fairy Green in division two.

The 69-51 win secured back-to-back titles for the Timor Street-based club after Blue won last year's grand final.

However, Port Fairy did not leave Warrnambool Bowls Club empty handed with Red - their division three side - storming to a 43-40 victory over Terang Red.
