Jamie Kermond has achieved his MER (minimum entry requirement) which qualifies him for Australian team selection for the upcoming Tokyo games.
Kermond's stepdad Shayne Fisher said he now had to earn a spot on the three-person team.
He said ticking off the MER was a relief for Kermond.
"Everyone has got to get it (to be in the selection frame) and unfortunately things had not worked out earlier with weather at the Australian championships," Fisher said.
"He was starting to get a little worried. Last weekend and this weekend were the last two opportunities.
"Now he's up there, he's a major chance to get there."
Fisher said Australia would finalise its showjumping team a couple of months out from the games, which start on July 24 and run until August 9.
He said Rowan Willis, Edwina Tops-Alexander and Chris Chugg were among those aiming for selection.
"It used to be a four-horse team and they cut it back to three and it makes it a little bit harder," Fisher said.
Kermond and his horse, Yandoo Oaks Constellation, are competing in the Fédération Equestre Internationale World Cup Jumping Series which comprises 13 leagues across all continents.
The top rider from each series is invited to compete in the final in Las Vegas from April 15-20. The Kermond-Yandoo Oaks Constellation combination is ranked fourth after nine rounds with one Australian round remaining at Boneo in Victoria on Sunday.
