The Allansford fast bowler, who is an integral part of Warrnambool Gold's bowling attack, said the squeeze for top spot in pool one was driving him to higher heights.
"It's a real even competition which is what you want in junior cricket," the right-arm bowler said.
"You want an even competition to be able to challenge yourself against the best."
The 15-year-old, whose father Ben is over in Toowoomba skippering the Vic Country side, said he had no big objectives heading into the week-long tournament.

Boyd has played a hand in nine wickets - seven from his own bowling and two run outs - in the opening three games of the annual junior competition.
He added another three wickets as Gold edged out Horsham in their second twenty20 fixture on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Boyd and his Gold teammates started the twenty20 stage of the tournament with a narrow two-run defeat to Warrnambool Blue.
It was Blue's second win of the campaign after defeating South West by 102 runs on Tuesday. They continued that winning form with a second twenty20 victory over Mount Gambier later on Wednesday.
Warrnambool White continued its winless start to the tournament with two defeats to Hamilton and South West.
Colac, who sits on top of the pool one ladder by just 0.58 of a point, scored one win and its first defeat in the side's opening twenty20 fixtures against Portland and Hamilton.
