Coates, who got 16 votes, took out the Mike Hamblin Medal from Kolora-Noorat's Toby Taylor and South Rovers' Scott Nicholson who both received 14 votes.
Coates said he didn't expect to come from behind in the final round.
"It was a pretty low vote count so that always makes it more thrilling when it's pretty low," he said.
"I wasn't sure, I thought maybe I was going to get a couple of votes a couple of rounds before that but I didn't.
''And I thought 'oh it's all over'."
Coates, who kicked 14 goals from 10 matches this season, has a preliminary final against Merrivale on Saturday.
Nirranda lost its second semi-final to Old Collegians on the weekend.
