Warrnambool first-gamer overcomes broken leg to earn his spot

The in-and-under midfielder will make his Hampden league senior debut on Saturday after overcoming a broken leg.

"I snapped my fibula in a practice match a few weeks before the season," Lowe said.

"I was out for the majority of the season. I got back playing two weeks ago. This will be my third game."

Lowe, 18, said his call-up was "a real surprise".

"I was just going to keep training but I never really thought I'd get back in at this time of the season," he said.

Warrnambool sits third with three home and away rounds to play and looks assured a double chance come finals. But Lowe, who is a second-year building apprentice, said his focus was on his first game.

He said holding his spot at the business end of the season would be a bonus.

"I won't put too much pressure on myself," Lowe said.

The Curdievale resident played juniors for Warrnambool and District league club Nirranda.

He joined Warrnambool last season, eager to play a higher level and with his cousins, Lachie and Zacc Dwyer at Warrnambool

"That is what made me move and I wanted to go to a Hampden team too," he said.

Warrnambool has picked Lowe to play against Hamilton Kangaroos at Reid Oval for his hard edge around the contest.

"I usually try and get in for the ball and get it out to the running players," he said.

"I will probably play a different role in the seniors but I will try and play my natural game."

Newly re-signed Blues coach Matt O'Brien said Lowe was "very aggressive with his one percenters".
