Warrnambool's Pedler family to umpire together for the first time

The Pedler clan - grandfather Daryl, 71, son Nigel, 44, and grandson Campbell, 11, - will team up for the Hampden league under 16 elimination final at Cobden.

Daryl and Nigel will occupy the goals and Campbell will run the boundary.

"It will be nice. It will be the first time I have umpired with Campbell," Daryl said.

"I've watched him a few times and I've watched Nigel a number of times over the years.

"It's nice having the three together and if we keep going at it - Nigel probably will and I probably will for a little bit longer - we can probably do this again sometime down the track."

Daryl followed Nigel - one of his two children - into umpiring in the late 1980s.

"He was as hopeless as playing football as his father was," he joked.

"I thought I want to show him he's doing the right thing - he's getting fit, he's being involved and he turned out to be pretty good at it."

Daryl has always been in goals but Nigel only moved into the role last season after more than 400 games in the field for the Warrnambool and District Football Umpires Association.

"I never critiqued Nigel as a central umpire because I've never central umpired," he said.

"I have given him the occasional tip on goal umpiring if I've seen something.

"This is his second full season of goal umpiring and when I was in my second season I was still learning but he's pretty darn good at it now."

Campbell, whose younger brother Riley has so far bucked the umpiring call, said umpiring was a big part of his family.

"My stepdad (Jamie Lake) umpires and dad too so I thought I might join in," he said.
