One of the team's best players, Mick Daniel, was injured in the club's match against Koroit on July 28, 1984.
It's believed the talented rover was struck in the face and fell, hitting his head on the ground.
After attempting to play on, he was taken off the field and lost consciousness in the clubrooms.
Daniel was revived but died in hospital two days later.
His death sent shockwaves through the club and the south-west sporting community.
South Warrnambool Football Netball Club committee member Jock O'Connor, who was playing that day, said the tragedy hit hard.
"We were devastated," O'Connor said.
"He was a very popular member of the team - very much loved and admired - and a good player too."
Daniel was just 21 when he passed away and was expected to be named in the club's best and fairest that year.
He was also a loveable larrakin who enjoyed playing footy and enjoying a drink with mates after the game.
O'Connor said the club had decided to mark the 35th anniversary since the club member's death by bringing his jumper out of retirement.
No one has worn the number 6 jumper since that fateful day, but the club has decided to award it to a promising up and coming player in memory of Daniel.
"The idea is to put the jumper back into circulation," O'Connor said.
"It will be given away to a promising junior."
O'Connor said the club had also invited Daniel's family members to a special presentation at the clubrooms on Thursday, August 1.
The former player's jumper has been framed and will have pride of place at South Warrnambool.
O'Connor invited friends and family members to attend the presentation at 7.30pm.
"We decided it was time to honour him," O'Connor said.
South Warrnambool footballers formed a guard of honour at the loved player's funeral, which was attended by about 700 people.
