Warrnambool-trained boxers Chelsie and Jamie Rose to fight in Mount Gambier

Mortlake-based Chelsie Rose, 22, and younger brother Jamie, 12, will represent Warrnambool coach Rodney 'Rude' Ryan's gym when they jump into the ring at Mount Gambier on Saturday.

Chelsie will make her debut just four months after taking up the sport and Jamie will fight for a second time after joining Ryan's program in January.

The siblings' special moment coincides with NAIDOC Week which will add extra significance.

"It is pretty exciting. We come from a very populated indigenous community, so it's really good and we're proud of where we've come from," Chelsie said.

Chelsie and Jamie grew up in Brewarrina, a small inland community of about 1000 people in north-west New South Wales.

Chelsie moved to Victoria four-and-a-half years ago with partner Tiare Ryder and works as a hairdresser at Hair At Red Studio in Warrnambool.

"My partner grew up in Mortlake so that is what brought me down," Chelsie said.

"He's a shearer and we met in north-west New South Wales.

"My dad (Charlie) was a shearer and I used to do a bit of roustabouting.

"It was a big change and took a little while to adapt (when I moved here), especially having no family and not knowing anyone.

"It was a good change though, I've accomplished a lot since I have been here."

Chelsie is the oldest of eight children.

Her mum Gillian and four of her siblings, including Jamie, relocated to be closer to her two years ago.

Boxing has become a way for Chelsie and Brauer College student Jamie to connect.

"The place where we grew up didn't really have any sporting opportunities, so boxing has been one of the good things we have done this year," she said.

"Our dad used to do a bit of boxing years ago when it was around in that area but it didn't really continue on.

"I was looking for a new fitness path and Jamie told me how exciting it was here at boxing so I came and had a go and have been loving it ever since."

The Roses have committed to their training. Chelsie ventures to Ryan's Kelp Street gym up to four times and week and Jamie trains most days after school.

Becoming a boxer has surprised Chelsie.

"It is something I have never done before and I never thought I was going to fight when I came here," she said.

"It was just for fitness but I am fighting now. I asked Rudy 'does he see a lot of brothers and sisters fighting on the same card and he said 'no', so it's a pretty good achievement."

The gym has also given the Roses a chance to expand their friendship circle.

"Ever since joining Rudy's it's been good in a social way and we've done a bit of travelling," Chelsie said.

"It's a really good vibe in here, I've enjoyed all the months I have been here."
