Warrnambool coach finds plenty of upside in defeat to ladder-leaders

The Blues were unable to end Cobden's undefeated run on Saturday, going down 48-44, but Poumako said the effort showed her side had improved since round one.

Back on the opening day the Bombers handed a depleted Blues' side a 71-34 thrashing.

"We have some momentum and we are slowly building on it and looking at what didn't work after each game and that will be our focus at training during the week," Poumako said of her side's current form.

The experienced mentor said her side would need to improve one area of its game before a test against an improved Terang Mortlake, who beat it by 10 goals back in round two, next week.

"We need to work on our passing into the shooter, Danielle Keilar, and giving her some better balls and ones not under too much pressure," she said.

"We will also need to work on our general accuracy with our passing."

Poumako was pleased with how her side, who sits in fourth spot, was starting to come together in recent matches.

"Definitely a much better game (than round one) and we had a bit of a different line up the first time round with injuries and we didn't have all our players there," she said.

"We are starting to get a full compliment back and we have been building the last three or four games on our individual and team games."

Poumako praised the efforts of defender Emma Cust and captain Sarah O'Keeffe.

Meanwhile, a win to Terang Mortlake has proven pivotal to its quest for a top five finish at season's end.

The Bloods moved a game clear in fifth after defeating Camperdown by 12 goals on Saturday.

Lisa Arundell's team are now within one victory of its next opponent, Warrnambool, keeping it in the hunt for fourth place.

The Magpies, who drop to sixth after the loss and play Koroit next week, are now level on points with South Warrnambool and Port Fairy after 10 matches.

The Roosters face Hamilton Kangaroos, who are second last, next week while the Seagulls play bottom-placed Portland.

Saturday's win over Camperdown was a perfect rebound for Terang Mortlake, which had lost its past two against Cobden and Koroit.

The Bloods' shooters - Jacqui Arundell, Jessica Davis and Melissa Burt - are finding form after a second consecutive week scoring 40 or more goals.

Arundell (35), Davis (36) and Burt (18) have combined for 89 goals in the past two weeks to help drive the Bloods back into some winning form.
