The Southern Stars held off a fast-finishing Kiwi outfit that got within six runs of snatching the win before running out of balls to score from.
The 19-year-old leg-spinner took a wicket with the first ball of her second over after conceding just three in her first over with ball in hand.
Wareham took the prized wicket of Katey Martin, who had made 20 off 31 balls before departing, bowled her around her legs with a nice floated ball. The teenager would finish with figures of 1-36 from her nine overs.
Wareham also got her first opportunity to bat on the international stage.
The Mortlake export made 10 runs off 25 balls before departing as Australia were bowled out in the last over of its innings for 241.
The Southern Stars return to action with game two in Adelaide on February 24.
