David Murcott wins 2018 Victorian sprintcar title at Premier Speedway

But the experienced speedway driver is hoping to add to his impressive record at what he can now call his home track.

“We have a property in town now, out Caramut Road so I spend a bit more time here than I used to,” he said after winning his third Victorian sprintcar title on Saturday night.

“I met my wife (Sally) here and she’s from the Hamilton-Warrnambool area so we have always gravitated towards Warrnambool. It’s a beautiful town, I love it here.”

Murcott, who also spends time in the Hamilton, held off a high-quality field to collect back-to-back state titles.

He started on pole, winning the 30-lap A-Main which ran without incident from Warrnambool’s Jamie Veal and Mount Gambier’s Steven Lines.

“The way the track was, they did the prep, it was obviously going to be important to get the lead and make the track work as well as it could for you,” Murcott said.

“We were lucky we got the job done. Victory Lane gave us a really good car.”

Murcott, who has won all three of his Victorian titles at Premier, said he was thrilled to beat the likes of Veal, Lines, James McFadden and teenage rising star Rusty Hickman. He also praised Warrnambool’s Darren Mollenoyux’s recent form. Mollenoyux made the feature via the B-Main following an earlier crash.

“It gives us confidence we have good speed to match it with them now,” Murcott said.

“You are only as good as your last race, so it’s good to get a win. It’s been a little while between drinks.”
