The 25-year-old will step out for the first time as Heytesbury Rebels captain-coach.
Vogels said he felt the time was right to step up after seven years as a player.
“We have a lot of young players at the club who are keen to learn,” Vogels said.
“We are looking to get off to a good start to the season and win some early games.”
The Rebels will take on Noorat on Saturday, an opponent Vogels is wary of.
“They have some dangerous players, especially batsmen, so we will have to play well,” he said.
In other games, Mortlake, the team which defeated the Rebels in last season’s grand final, will begin its quest for three flags in a row when it takes on Cobden at DC Farran Oval.
Camperdown will host Bookaar while Pomborneit will be at home to Terang.
