Camperdown coach Phil Carse takes on role at NEAFL club Redland

Carse has accepted the senior coaching role at NEAFL club Redland – the team the Magpies recruited him from four years ago.

Camperdown president Kevin Russell said Carse, who has flown to Vanuatu for a wedding, informed the Hampden league club of his decision on Monday.

“He’s got a senior coaching role up there. It’s a bit of a promotion I suppose in the NEAFL, it’s a bit like our VFL,” he said.

“It’s mixed emotions. He’s loved his time here.

“He brought a different culture to the club, a lot more professionalism than there used to be.

“It’s been a more dedicated team than it might have been in the past. All the players respect him.”

Carse led the Magpies to their first grand final in 12 years on Saturday. They fell to Koroit by 11 points.

Russell said Carse had made a positive impact at Leura Oval, leaving the club in a strong position to advertise for a new coach.

“We knew Phil was getting offers from Geelong and this side of Melbourne,” he said.

“We have spoken to a few people in case but now we’ll speak to them a bit more.”

Russell said having a senior coach in the role for four years had benefitted the Magpies and aided their players’ development.

He is hopeful they can recruit a new mentor willing to commit long-term.

Carse joined the Magpies in 2015 on a three-year deal and inked a one-year extension 12 months ago.
