“I'm a very competitive person,” Collins said after he was named South West Sport’s junior male of the year at Wednesday night’s presentation ceremony.
“I could be doing anything and I make it competitive. It could be something like who can mow the lawns the quickest. I don't mind what it is, I'm a very competitive person and I like to win.”
The 18-year-old, who is in his rookie season in the Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) riding for Next Gen Motorsport, said his competitive streak was not the only driver keeping him in the sport.
“I love the adrenaline rush you get when you are riding at 300km\h with no roll cage and you can literally touch the guy next to you, nothing gets better than that,” he said.
Collins, who was introduced to the sport by his father Jon, said he was still learning about the 1000cc BMW superbike he rides and about the competitors he faces every round on the championship.
“The superbike is a more powerful bike and I have to get my head around how to ride that,” he said.
“The people I’m competing against have been in superbikes for over 10 more years than I have, so I’m trying to gain that experience in a short amount of time.
“It’s an area I need to improve on at the moment, but it can only come over time.”
Collins’ next ride is round four of the ASBK at Darwin’s Hidden Valley Raceway from June 28 to July 1.
