A group of south-east Melbourne tradesmen have smashed Warrnambool’s record for biggest catch by reeling in a 291.8 kilogram mako shark off Port Fairy’s coast.
Glazier Adam O’Neill said the previous record was thought to be about 250 kilograms.
Mr O’Neill was fishing with three mates, including Steve Dodd, when they snagged the shark, measuring 3.2 metres long.
The sheer size and weight of the catch meant it had to be towed to shore.
“We were hoping for something between 50 and 100 kilograms,” Mr O’Neill said. “We never expected this big thing.
“It was too big for Steve (the angler) to reel in so we towed it for two-and-a-half hours back to Warrnambool to get weighed.”
