Gators skipper Nick Maddison (73) and Harrison Bond (43) teamed together for a 108-run opening stand as they cruised to eight-wicket victory against West Warrnambool.
But Maddison credited a strong bowling display for the triumph, which came just three weeks after the Gators fell to the Panthers in a twenty20 match.
Gator Alex Billington claimed 4-25 as the Panthers were reduced to 9-131. Panther Alex O’Connor made 45.
“We got 18 overs out of our two spinners in Ryan McCluggage and Matt Brophy,” Maddison said.
“They were both economical in the middle overs and that was a bit of a key.”
Maddison said work commitments forced fellow opener Tim McDonald out as a late withdrawal, paving the way for Bond to step up.
“Harrison was good at the top of the order in the twenty20 and he got his chance,” he said.
“He is a pretty good timer of the ball.”
Maddison played down his own efforts.
“It didn’t look too pretty early on. It wouldn’t be the best innings I’ve had but you take any runs you can get,” he said.
“Towards the end I would’ve found the middle on a few but West would have thought they were a chance to get me out early on.”
A six-wicket haul from Ben Evans was the catalyst for Wesley-CBC’s six-wicket win over Merrivale.
Evans snared 6-18 as the Beavers broke their losing streak in convincing fashion.
The Beavers, who dropped their three twenty20 matches, found their feet in the one-day format, dismantling the Tigers for 93.
Wesley-CBC went on to post 8-153 – a score which included a handy 44 from Ryan McArdle.
A 98 from skipper Mark Murphy helped East Warrnambool-YCW to a 102-run win over Nestles.
The Broncos made 8-176 and restricted Factory to 9-74 in reply.
Woodford was too strong for Nirranda, posting a seven-wicket win. Eels skipper Nick Butters (68) and reigning cricketer of the year Kory Howlett (37) put on a 108-run third-wicket stand.
Dennington remains winless after suffering a 51-run loss to Russells Creek. Opening bat Charlie Locke top-scored with 46 for Creek as it mustered 9-116. Glenn Moore grabbed 3-10 as the Dogs were rattled for 65.
