Detective Senior Constable Roger McClure, of Hamilton police, said the towers were only visited periodically and the batteries were stolen last month.
He said the 15 Century Yuasa batteries each weighed 67 kilograms and he described the theft as unusual as they were specialised back-up batteries for the towers. "The batteries are purpose built and not suitable for general use," he said.
Meanwhile, a Heywood P-plater who veered onto the wrong side of the road and caused a head-on collision late Tuesday night is expected to be charged with drink driving and other offences.
Portland police Sergeant Gary Cooper said a two-car accident happened on the Princes Highway near Heathmere at 11.40pm when the 18-year-old driver crossed onto the wrong side of the road.
The P-plater recorded an alcohol reading of .104.
