A group of Warrnambool College students has organised a screening of the animated family movie Minions at Warrnambool’s Capitol Cinema tonight from 6pm.
The event will raise funds and awareness of mental health issues and the Western Region Alcohol and Drug Centre (WRAD).
Warrnambool College student leadership co-ordinator Rose Shamoail said the students wanted to fund-raise for a local organisation as well as increasing mental health awareness.
“They did research on local organisations that provide mental health services and found out how WRAD helps young people and people of any age with drug and alcohol abuse but also with their mental health, depression and anxiety issues,” Ms Shamoail said.
“Mental health awareness is important to our student leaders. Mental illness affects many people in life — whether it’s a student, a parent, a friend or a colleague.”
The students organising the screening range from year 8 to 12.
Money will also be raised for WRAD via an out-of-uniform day, a barbecue, and a sleepout in the school gym.
WRAD director Geoff Soma welcomed the students’ support and fund-raising efforts.
“It’s a wonderful initiative of Warrnambool College to support WRAD’s work in the community, especially around people with mental illness,” he said.
Tickets are available from Warrnambool College on 5564 4444.
